SUMMARY:Invitation to the Ninth Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD 9) Thematic Event
DESCRIPTION:Digital Public Infrastructure and Regional Command and Control Centre for Addressing Human-Nature Conflicts in Africa \nWe invite you to join a high-level thematic event at TICAD 9\, dedicated to the establishment of a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Regional Command and Control Centre for Addressing Human-Nature Conflicts in Africa\, essential tools to tackle escalating human–nature conflicts\, such as climate change\, human–wildlife conflict\, Agropastoral conflict land encroachment\, poaching\, and illegal wildlife trade in the Africa Region. \nAnchored within the Regional Command-and-Control Centre based at Nairobi\, the DPI system will utilize a secure UN cloud\, to enable cross-border collaboration and coordinated responses to nature-based conflicts. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Digital Public Infrastructure Framework and the UN General Assembly Resolution A/79/L.96 on combating illicit wildlife trafficking. Spearheaded by the Lusaka Agreement\, African Governments\, the United Nations agencies\, and the Remote Sensing Technology Center of Japan (RESTEC) – the DPI–Human–Nature Conflict Project will integrate multiple spatial and non-spatial datasets related to biodiversity interventions and climate change into an UN-hosted cloud server. These datasets will be utilised\, alongside advanced remote sensing and satellite technologies including GIS\, to develop Digital Public Goods (DPGs) for monitoring and addressing impacts caused by human–wildlife conflict\, agropastoral tensions\, poaching and illegal trade\, as well as transboundary climate impacts.” \nThe event will feature a keynote speech by H.E. Hon. Dr. William Ruto\, President of the Republic of Kenya\, followed by a panel discussion with Ministerial and technical experts from African governments\, regional bodies\, and Japan. This event will also outline on how the Regional Command and Control Center will provide facilities for top academic institutions around the world to carry out research using primary data to address challenges faced by African countries. SUMMARY:THE 14TH GOVERNING COUNCIL MEETING OF PARTIES TO THE LUSAKA AGREEMENT\, 5TH - 8TH MAY 2025\, ARUSHA\, TANZANIA
DESCRIPTION:Pursuant to Rule 13 of the Rules of Procedure for meetings of the Lusaka Agreement Governing Council\, I have the honour to inform you that the 14th Governing Council Meeting of Parties to the Lusaka Agreement will be held from 5th– 8th May 2025 in Arusha\, Tanzania. \nFurther\, as stipulated in Rules 5\, 18 and 19\, the meeting will be open to Parties\, all African States\, the United Nations and its specialized agencies and any states non-party to the Agreement as well as any body or agency qualified in the fields relating to law enforcement in wild fauna and flora\, which has informed LATF of its wish to be represented as an observer. \nThe Ministerial Session of the Governing Council meeting scheduled for 8th May\, will be preceded by a three-day Experts meeting\, that shall validate the Task Force’s five-year Strategic Plan and discuss substantive technical matters related to the implementation of the Lusaka Agreement. This meeting will review the progress on the Decisions made during the 13th Governing Council Meeting held in March 2022 in Livingstone-Zambia\, the Extraordinary Meeting of the 13th Governing Council held in June 2023 and the Bureau Meeting of June 2024 held in Nairobi-Kenya and the implementation of LATF’s Programmes of Work. DESCRIPTION:Pursuant to Rule 13 of the rules of procedures for meetings of the Lusaka Agreement Governing Council and in accordance with the Decisions of the Extra-Ordinary 13th Governing Council held in Nairobi in June 2023\, I have the honour to inform you that the Bureau Meeting of the 13th Governing Council of Parties to the Lusaka Agreement will be held from 27th – 28th June 2024 at the Ole Sereni Hotel in Nairobi\, Kenya. This event will be held alongside the IUCN Africa Conservation Forum\, taking place at Emara Ole Sereni Hotel from 24 – 28 June 2024. \nAs stipulated in rules 5\, 18 and 19 of the rules of procedures for meetings of the Lusaka Agreement Governing Council\, the meeting will be open to Parties\, all African States\, the United Nations and its specialized agencies and any states non-party to the Agreement as well as anybody or agency qualified in the fields relating to law enforcement in wild fauna and flora\, which has informed LATF of its wish to be represented as an observer. \nThe Ministerial session of the Bureau meeting to be held on 28th June will be preceded by a one-day Experts meeting that shall deliberate on substantive technical matters on the implementation of the Lusaka Agreement.
