The Lusaka Agreement Task Force is concerned about the recent seizures of wildlife specimens particularly elephant ivory, rhino horn and live animals in the Far East as recently revealed by the media. This contraband that mainly originates in Africa is symptomatic of an upsurge in illegal wildlife trade.
The Lusaka Agreement Task Force commends law enforcement authorities in various parts of the world, in particular the Philippines, Hong Kong S.A.R. of China, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan for their vigilance that led to the recent seizures.
As the Lusaka Agreement Task Force in conjunction with its partners intensifies its law enforcement activities, its appeals to the seizing authorities outside Africa to enhance co-operation with authorities in countries of export/re-export by providing detailed information pertaining to the consignments. Such information is necessary for effective investigations by law enforcement authorities in exporting countries for purposes of suppressing the criminal syndicates.
African countries are strongly urged to curtail poaching and also increase surveillance against illegal trafficking of wildlife specimens especially at entry/exit points.
